Time Commitment: Julie, Amber and Melinda each are committee members for the Run to Fight Children’s Cancer annual 5K/10K race. All those involved meet monthly to discuss the logistics of the run, scheduling, and fundraising efforts. In addition, Melinda has donated additional time on the day of the race to arrive early and aid in day-of set up. Additionally, each year Pono has a team of runners/walkers participate in the event.

The mission of Grand Canyon University’s Students Inspiring Students (SIS) scholarship program is to grant local students the opportunity to receive a private college education.

Many inner-city students in our community do not achieve their dreams of obtaining a college education due to financial challenges. To make private, Christian education an accessible reality for all, GCU’s Students Inspiring Students program gives students the means and conviction to pursue and achieve their dreams of earning a college degree as they give back to their community.

How the Program Works: Students Inspiring Students awards scholarships to local eligible high school seniors who have sought assistance in the GCU Learning Lounge®.

During their time on campus, scholarship recipients work directly with the GCU Learning Lounge assisting local K-12 students in a variety of categories including advanced-level classes, academic performance, goal setting, classroom confidence and more.

Scholarship recipients have the opportunity to reinvest in their community through mentorship opportunities provided by the GCU Learning Lounge.

Scholarship recipients also gain industry experience through job opportunities located both on and off campus allowing them to prepare for their careers beyond graduation.

Upon graduation many scholars choose to stay in the local community, pursuing jobs that allow them to keep investing in the development of the West Valley.
